He was a member of the Cambridge Aero Team that received special OSTIV recognition in 1997 for pioneering development of the GPS-based flight for documenting soaring contests, badges and records.
John Good served as a Regional Director on the SSA Board of Directors. In addition, he was the editor of Soaring magazine for three years and, from 1986 to 2013, has written many articles for the magazine on competition, the associated rules and various other topics. During this time he served on the SSA Rules Committee, composing final wording for rule changes. He was also SSA Contest Board Chairman from 1992 to 2000. Especially valuable to followers of world competition have been his real time reports on daily events during these contests.
As for his soaring accomplishments, he has made four 1000 K flights with one in each category - out and return, zig-zag, straight out and triangle. He was the winner of the Hilton Cup in 1993. His FAI badges are Silver #4804 in 1986, Gold #1663 in 1986, Diamond #764 (Intl #5351) in 1991, 1000 K Diploma #36 (Intl #136) in 1990 and the SSA Distance Award in 1997. He set a World Out and Return record of 1261.65 km in 1997 (single place and open class) as well as several U.S. national records in six different categories of distance titles.
In addition, he was instrumental in the rescue of a fellow pilot from an accident in April 2007 by successfully pinpointing the remote location within 1/4 mile and assisting in the recovery - thus providing significant help in saving the pilot's life.
John Good was awarded the Exceptional Achievement Award in 1997 and 1998 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2009.
